Did You Know...
... that the Harris (Indian Pond) Project is a typical hydroelectric project, owned and operated by the Central Maine Power Company? The project is located in a wilderness-like setting in central Maine. Harris Dam is 165 feet high, creating a 72,000 acre-foot reservoir. The project has an installed generating capacity of 76MW. From a recreational standpoint, the project offers a remarkably wide variety of activities that might not be available were it not for the dam. The 3,700 acre reservoir provides excellent fishing and boating opportunities for thousands of people annually.
On the banks of the reservoir one can find picnic areas, boat launches and docks. The tailrace area and the river below comprise a section of Kennebec River Gorge well known throughout New England for its whitewater rafting and kayaking. Releases made with the cooperation of the owner allow 50,000 enthusiasts to take rafting trips each summer. In the winter, a snowmobile trail along the project's transmission line easement permits the relatively safe usage of these vehicles. In general, recreation is enhanced through the owner's vigilance and continuing efforts to incorporate appropriate public safety measures at all facilities.
