Dam Modifications to Improve Performance During Strong Earthquakes

Foreword

This report was prepared to provide a compendium of modifications of existing dams to illustrate what has been done, and to serve as a source of ideas for owners in need of improving their dams' performance during expected earthquakes. It consists of a general discussion on the modification of existing dams, 11 case histories of modifications, a table listing modifications by type, and a comprehensive list of references.

To prepare this report, the USSD Committee on Earthquakes reviewed technical literature and solicited contributions from major dam owners, regulatory agencies and consultants in the United States. The committee is grateful for those contributions. Donald H. Babbitt coordinated the committee's efforts and wrote the introductory section. Principal contributing authors were: Babbitt, Francis G. McLean, and Richard W. Kramer. Harry E. Thomas, a former member of the committee, provided the information from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission files. George F. Horowitz edited the final draft.
